Next Subscription Economy may arrive with Telecos monthly bills

THE next strategic opportunity for Indian telecom companies is not merely selling connectivity to AI - it is becoming the billing and trust layer for AI itself.

Jio and Airtel already possess three assets that AI companies struggle to replicate at scale: hundreds of millions of authenticated users, recurring billing relationships and trusted digital infrastructure. Both are also moving toward sovereign cloud and enterprise AI infrastructure: Jio offers sovereign AI Cloud and JioBrain for private/custom LLM deployment, while Airtel offers sovereign cloud and AI-ready infrastructure.

The strategic leap is "AI-as-a-Telecom-Subscription."

Imagine a 799–7999 monthly Agentic AI layer added directly to the telecom bill: personal AI agents, family AI, business copilots, multilingual assistants, coding agents and eventually autonomous task execution-powered by sovereign LLMs/SLMs and priced through tokens, tasks or compute consumption.

For enterprises, the opportunity is substantially larger: telecom subsidiaries could offer private, sovereign, enterprise-grade AI stacks -LLMs, SLMs, vector databases, agents, inference, cybersecurity, data residency and managed AI-bundled with connectivity, cloud and edge infrastructure.

This changes the telcos from a pipe provider into an AI utility.

The 10× market-cap argument, however, should be treated as a strategic scenario rather than a forecast. The valuation re-rating would require AI revenue to become material, recurring and high-margin-not simply another bundled feature.

The real moat

Trust + identity + connectivity + billing + data locality + enterprise distribution.

That combination is unusually powerful.

The telecom bill could become the "AI wallet" of the Indian consumer and enterprise -similar to how the electricity bill became the gateway for appliances, or how the smartphone became the gateway for applications.

And tokenization could create an entirely new pricing architecture:

Connectivity - Cloud - Compute - Tokens - Agents - Outcomes

The winner may not be the company with the best foundational model. It may be the company that owns the distribution, authentication, payment relationship and trusted execution layer around millions of AI agents.

Opportinity window is closing for the boardroom: Telcos should stop asking "How do we monetize AI?" and start asking "How much of the AI economy can we bill?"

India's enterprise AI spending is already accelerating sharply, while governance and data sovereignty remain significant adoption constraints-precisely the gap a trusted Indian telco could address.

The cost of inaction: telecom companies could remain infrastructure providers while hyperscalers, model companies, space tech  and AI-agent platforms capture the higher-margin subscription layer.
