NEW DELHI, MAY 08, 2026: JYOTIRADITYA M. Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, along with Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi, and Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development yesterday dedicated the renovated Nehru Place Post Office to the public in New Delhi. The event was also attended by Secretary (Posts) Vandita Kaul, Director General Postal Services Jitendra Gupta, Chief Postmaster General Delhi Circle Akhilesh Pandey and senior officers of the Department of Posts.

Addressing the gathering, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said that India Post is one of the country's most trusted institutions and continues to play a critical role in financial inclusion, service delivery and national connectivity. Referring to the vital role of the postal network, he said that just as arteries carrying blood sustain the human body, the Department of Posts serves and connects every corner of the nation through its unmatched network and dedicated workforce, including the Dakiyas, who remains deeply connected with every household.

The Union Minister emphasized that legacy institutions must evolve with changing times and highlighted the Department's efforts to modernize infrastructure, strengthen logistics capabilities and improve customer-centric services and experience. He stated that the renovated Post Office reflects the Department's commitment towards creating bright, efficient, digitally-enabled and citizen-friendly public service spaces.

The Union Minister informed that the Department has invested nearly Rs 5,000 crore in modernizing its IT infrastructure and has rolled out Advanced Postal Technology over the past year. As part of this transformation, the Department has introduced several citizen-centric reforms, including UPI-enabled services, OTP-based delivery, 24x7 and extended-hour Post Offices, and guaranteed time-bound delivery services such as 24 Speed Post and 48 Speed Post across major metros.

Highlighting the scale of operations of India Post, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia stated that the Department operates over 1.65 lakh Post Offices across the country, delivers nearly 90 crore letters and 7.5 crore parcels annually, and manages over 40 crore Post Office Savings Bank accounts with deposits exceeding Rs 23 lakh crore.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while addressing the gathering, expressed gratitude to the Department of Posts on behalf of the 3 crore residents of Delhi for selecting the national capital for the country's first upgraded Post Office under the nationwide modernization initiative. She stated that the renovation and rejuvenation of post offices reflect the Government's strong commitment towards strengthening citizen-centric public infrastructure.

The Chief Minister appreciated the transformation of India Post into a modern multi-service public institution offering banking, Aadhaar, passport, insurance and digital services under one roof. Referring to her visit to the renovated facility, she remarked that the upgraded Nehru Place Post Office was so impressive that it truly made her say "WOW".

Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani highlighted the importance of strengthening modern and citizen-centric infrastructure to meet evolving customer expectations and reaffirmed the Department's commitment towards "Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa". He stated that institutions must modernize with time and emphasized that the Department's vision is to transform India Post into a movement instead of a monument. He also highlighted the contribution of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), describing them as the backbone of rural postal services in the country.

Vandita Kaul Secretary (Posts) stated that the modernization initiative aims to improve customer experience, operational efficiency and service standards while preserving the public trust associated with India Post.

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Minister Scindia, the Department of Posts is undergoing a major transformation focused on modernization, digital enablement and citizen-centric service delivery as part of the vision for Viksit Bharat 2047.

Located in one of Delhi's busiest commercial centres, the Post Office has been selected as the first site under the Proof of Concept (PoC) initiative being implemented across 40 Post Offices in 17 States. The redevelopment marks a significant step towards building a modern, technology-enabled and citizen-centric postal network for New India.

The Nehru Place Post Office has been comprehensively upgraded in accordance with the Design Manual developed by the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi, in collaboration with the Department of Posts. Designed from a contemporary public architecture perspective, the upgraded Post Office places strong emphasis on openness, accessibility, and enhanced public interaction. The redesigned space features a standardized India Post façade, illuminated signage, modern waiting areas, modular service counters, improved lighting, barrier-free access, and digitally integrated service zones to create a seamless and welcoming experience for citizens.

The renovated Nehru Place Post Office reflects the Department's vision of transforming Post Offices into modern centres of Jan Seva Connect. Building on the success of this initiative, the Department of Posts has identified an additional 120 Post Offices across the country for similar modernization during FY 2026-27. By transforming the Post Office into a thoughtfully designed public service space, the initiative aims to strengthen the role of Post Offices as vibrant community touchpoints delivering essential services including Speed Post, Aadhaar services, Post Office Savings Bank, Passport Seva Kendra, Postal Life Insurance, and philately services.
