NEW DELHI, OCT 15, 2025: A high-level meeting was held between Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, and Prof. Rajiva Laxman Karandikar, Chairman, National Statistical Commission (NSC), Prof. A Ganesh Kumar, Member NSC, Asit Kumar Sadhu Member NSC along with Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and Member Secretary, NSC. The meeting was held ahead of the one-day State Interaction of the National Statistical Commission with the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Uttar Pradesh.

The discussion centered on strengthening Uttar Pradesh's statistical system to support its vision of becoming a one trillion-dollar economy. The Chief Minister appreciated the collaborative efforts of MoSPI and NSC in improving data quality, particularly in the estimation of State GDP, Consumer Price Index, employment indicators, and industrial statistics. He also emphasized the State Government's commitment to data-driven planning and real-time monitoring through initiatives such as the CM Dashboard and the One Trillion Economy Mission.

Chairman, NSC, highlighted the pivotal role of reliable statistics in framing evidence-based public policy. He reiterated NSC's commitment to support the State in methodological and technical areas such as Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) estimation, price statistics, and survey design. He also noted that harmonization of central and state-level statistical systems is key to ensuring accuracy, comparability, and timeliness of data across all levels of governance.

Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary, MoSPI, underlined the Ministry's ongoing collaboration with the State under the "Support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS)" Scheme. He assured that both technical and financial assistance will continue to be extended to Uttar Pradesh for developing modern statistical infrastructure, enhancing data management systems, and conducting training and workshops for DES officials on emerging methodologies and technologies.

The State's progress in several statistical areas was noted with appreciation. Uttar Pradesh currently has one of the lowest inflation rates among major States and regularly releases its State-level Index of Industrial Production (IIP). DES Uttar Pradesh has also been actively contributing to national surveys such as the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES), and Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE). The upcoming revision of the base year for GDP and IIP to 2022–23 was discussed, and MoSPI assured full support in developing the new item basket and factory frame.

The Commission lauded the efforts of DES Uttar Pradesh in integrating statistical data with governance and development planning. Chairman NSC encouraged the State to further expand its statistical coverage to capture new and emerging sectors, including those linked to digital and service-based economic activities. The NSC Chair also stressed the need to ensure data quality at the district level through methodological reviews.

The Chief Minister welcomed the suggestions and expressed the State's readiness to collaborate closely with MoSPI and NSC. He observed that robust and credible data is essential to measure progress in key sectors such as agriculture, industry, health, and education, and assured continued institutional support for all statistical initiatives in the State.

The meeting also discussed the importance of using administrative and alternative data sources, leveraging technology for real-time reporting, and adopting uniform standards in line with the National Statistical System. MoSPI informed that through regular consultations, capacity-building programmes, and digital initiatives, States are being equipped to use statistical data more effectively for local and regional development.

This interaction marked a positive step towards stronger coordination between the Central and State statistical agencies. Both sides reaffirmed their shared goal of developing a transparent, technology-enabled, and data-driven statistical framework that can effectively support Uttar Pradesh's economic transformation and inclusive development goals.
