25 countries, 200 global marquee speakers part of Startup Summit

NEW DELHI, JAN 16, 2021: THE first day of the Startup India International Summit, 'Prarambh' saw leading industry minds from over 25 countries share their experiences on topics ranging from technologies, innovation, robust policies and initiative on Friday.

The two-day event, being organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, was opened by Mr Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry.

Day One of the summit saw over 1,20,000 registrations and was devoted to host dignitaries and stakeholders from the seven Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) member states.

The day also saw non-stop pitching by 54 enterprising startups with 75 investors, along with a marathon of sessions focussed on various aspects of global best practices and nurturing stronger startup ecosystems.

A closed door roundtable was also chaired by Mr Goyal with an emphasis on internationalisation for startups and mobilising global capital for Indian startups while promoting ease of doing business for global venture funds.

The roundtable was attended by major Indian regulators, policy makers, ministries and around 70 venture capitalists from across US, Japan, Korea, and Singapore, who had AUM worth USD 1.4 billion in the Indian region.

It was pointed out in the meeting that India has the third largest startup ecosystem in the world and the ecosystem has seen a dramatic transformation over the past decade. There has been K-shaped recovery in second half of 2020 - with sectors like education, healthcare, ecommerce, food delivery having been positively impacted, while sectors like travel and hospitality were severely impacted.

Founders and leaders from Axilor Ventures, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, MakeMyTrip, Softbank India and Snapdeal were also present in the summit.

On Day two, Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi will interact with the startups and deliver an address via videoconference.
