NEW DELHI, DEC 22, 2020: STATE-RUN engineering and manufacturing enterprise Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) said they are taking the lead in reaching out to local industries and suppliers to promote the Make in India movement.
“BHEL has been spearheading the Make in India movement with a special focus on contributing to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan,” a statement from them said.
The company is interested in the indigenisation of more than 300 items across nine categories, currently imported by BHEL's 16 manufacturing units, valued at over Rs 3,000 crore per annum, said Chairman and MD, Dr Nalin Shinghal.
They are also organising a series of workshops, titled 'BHEL Samvaad,' under the guidance of the Department of Heavy Industry (DHI), to foster the development of technologies and products so imported items could be manufactured in India.
The first in the series of online workshops on collaborative manufacturing, conducted today, saw a cross-section of over 80 participants from industries bodies, businesses, BHEL vendors and MSMEs coming together to dwell upon the next steps for increased cooperation in indigenous manufacturing.
Mr Arun Goel, Secretary Heavy Industries, chaired the workshop, and expressed concern over the pandemic's impact on economies and supply chains across the world.
He said the lockdowns have made many countries rethink their overdependence on imports and emphasised the need for self-sufficiency. During his address, Mr Goel emphasized the need for Indian vendors to join hands to address the market with indigenous technology at competitive rates and world-class quality.
BHEL MD, Dr Shinghal said they intend to offer indigenous products with indigenous supply chains. He stressed on the need for engaging the manufacturing ecosystem of the country, for developing indigenous capabilities, enhancing competitiveness and reducing dependence on the neighbouring economy.
The event was telecast live on BHEL's official Facebook page and YouTube channel, with more than 1,500 participants tuning in.
