NEW DELHI, DEC 17, 2020: PRASAR Bharati CEO Mr Shashi Shekhar Vempati beat the candidate from China's state-run NRTA to be elected as the Vice President of Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), one of the largest broadcasting associations in the world, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said on Wednesday.
"Prasar Bharati has achieved another global milestone in broadcasting today," the ministry said.
The election happened on Wednesday during the General Assembly of ABU which was held virtually due to COVID-19. India's candidature was forwarded by Japan's public broadcaster NHK and received strong regional support.
The candidature of the nominee from China's National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) failed to garner support from any of the members, paving the way for Mr Vempati who was elected with immediate effect and will serve a three-year term.
Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr Prakash Javadekar, congratulated Mr Vempati on his election and thanked all the ABU members who voted in India's favour.
The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union was formed in 1964 as a professional association of broadcasting organisations with over 286 members in 57 countries and regions, reaching the potential population of about three billion people.
