BHEL inks MoU with SwissRapide AG to bring Maglev Trains to India

NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 08, 2020: BHARAT Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SwissRapide AG for Maglev Train Projects in India. To this effect, the MOU was signed by Mr. SV Srinivasan, GM & Head (TBSG), BHEL and Mr. Niklaus H. Koenig, President and CEO, SwissRapide AG. This MOU sets out the foundation to cooperate and explore business opportunities, and to utilise both companies’ inherent capabilities, respective skills, knowledge and assets for mutual benefit with the scope of SwissRapide’s Maglev Train Projects in India. BHEL has been pioneering new technologies and has been a reliable partner in the growth of Indian Railways for over 50 years by supplying electric as well as diesel locomotives, electric multiple unit (EMU) trains, and propulsion system sets and drives for the same. Notably, Kolkata Metro, the first metro in India, is equipped with BHEL made propulsion systems. The first ever air-conditioned EMU trains, presently operated in Mumbai suburban, are also equipped with BHEL made propulsion and related electrics. SwissRapide AG is a Swiss company specialised in the development, project management, planning, design, implementation and commissioning of international Maglev Train projects and the related technologies. SwissRapide AG holds the unique position of being the supplier of the Transrapid Maglev technology, the only established and commercially proven Ultra-Highspeed Maglev Rail system in the world.
